Transforming Traditional Pinball into a Modern FEC Attraction

While pinball has seen a resurgence in popularity, traditional pinball machines faced several obstacles in the FEC environment:

• Revenue Integration: No way to connect pinball machines to venue redemption systems, limiting their appeal to FEC operators
• Guest Experience: Traditional pinball layout offered limited spectator engagement and tracking capabilities
• Operator Concerns: Lack of integration with cashless systems and difficulty measuring ROI
• Player Engagement: No progression systems or modern gaming features to drive repeat visits
• Technical Complexity: Multiple disconnected systems created operational challenges

We approached the PinballXP project with a clear vision: transform standalone pinball machines into a cohesive FEC attraction that speaks the language of modern entertainment venues. Working closely with Jersey Jack Pinball and Creative Works, we developed a comprehensive solution that bridges the gap between traditional pinball and modern FEC operations.

The foundation of our solution is a deep integration with Jersey Jack's premium pinball machines, allowing us to tap into game events and scoring systems. We created a custom built application - Pinball Connect. This software runs on each of the machines communicating with Takoha and therefore to all systems also integrated with Takoha.

This connection between multiple platforms enables features that were previously impossible, such as digital ticket awards based on player performance and leaderboards which are based on cumulative experience points that are earned by playing over time.

We dramatically enhanced the spectator experience by adding 65-inch displays above each machine, streaming live playfield action. This not only creates a more engaging atmosphere but also helps newer players understand the game mechanics by clearly showing the action happening on the playfield.

The integration with venue cashless systems was crucial. Players can now seamlessly use their venue game cards to start games, associate data from the pinball machine back to their venue account and allow for ticket redemption. This also gives operators clear visibility into machine performance and ROI, something that was previously impossible with traditional pinball.

The custom installation system, developed in partnership with Creative Works, transforms five premium machines into an attractive destination within the venue. The impressively designed truss system with integrated displays creates a dominant visual presence while optimizing traffic flow and spectator viewing angles.

Perhaps most importantly, we've created a progression system that drives long-term engagement. Players can now:

• Earn XP and level up through continued play
• Compete for positions on global and local leaderboards based on cumulative scores (rather than individual game scores)
• Earn digital tickets based on their skill level
• Unlock special game modes and jackpot opportunities
• Track their stats and achievements over time via the venue branded mobile app (which appears in the app store under the venue name)

What makes this project special is how it preserves the core appeal of pinball while adding the features that modern FEC operators need. The technology enhances rather than replaces the fundamental pinball experience, creating something that appeals to both casual players and pinball enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, the platform we've built opens up exciting possibilities for the future of location-based pinball. The system can easily accommodate new game titles, feature updates, and even cross-venue tournaments. As Jersey Jack continues to release new titles, they can be seamlessly integrated into the PinballXP ecosystem.
